‘The Alternatives’ are in the pink!
Last month, a group of Alternative Futures Group office staff got together to form ‘The Alternatives’; a group of passionate ladies all ready to kick cancer’s ass at the UK’s biggest women-only fundraising event, Race for Life. ‘The Race for Life Liverpool Twilight’ was held at Liverpool’s Pier Head on a dark and rainy Friday night in October and was the first ‘Twilight’ Race for Life piloted in the North West.
The group – Stephanie Keeling, Jackie Woods, Helen Lovett, Dee Hembrough, Nicki Boon and Sheila Vose (along with Nicki’s daughter Amy and Sheila’s daughter Danielle) gathered at Jackie’s house after work, with not even the bad weather dampening their high spirits.
Stephanie, a Specialist Trainer at Alternative Futures Group told us: “We all assembled at Jackie’s house (who is such a great host and even provided pre-run nibbles!) to get our outfits on; pink finery including flashing lights, tutus, feather boas, electric pink leg warmers and Deely Boppers.
We got a few beeps from cars passing by while waiting for the bus and our kind bus driver waived the fee into town.
The runners, (or walkers in our case), assembled by the Liver Buildings as dusk settled, where we had a pep talk from the organisers and a Zumba warm up to get the blood flowing! Helen’s husband and daughter were on the side lines to encourage us all.
The rain managed to hold off until we started, but unfortunately it let rip once the race began. Great views of Birkenhead lit up across the water (looking between the raindrops). We set off and soon split into two ‘packs’, the walkers, and the slightly faster walkers! Group 1 finished in about 50 minutes, and Group 2 just a few minutes later; Deely Boppers drooping, feather boas moulting, and all of us generally dripping, but a good time was had by all!
So far we have raised £524, with some promised sponsorship still to be collected.
