Cheshire In Bloom

Green fingered residents supported by AFG Cheshire have been rewarded for their contribution to AFG Cheshire’s Absolutely Fabulous Garden Competition 2013, at a special Garden Party Awards Ceremony.

The competition encouraged entries in 5 fabulous categories:

Most fabulous

  • Garden
  • Small Display
  • Pond
  • Vegetable Patch
  • Patio

Winners were presented with their prizes during a ceremony at New Life Church, Congleton on Saturday 17 August. Awards were presented by Joanne Chilton, Community Services Director for AFG Cheshire, Nancy McFarland, SURF Chairman and Kristie Jacobs, Area Manager for AFG Cheshire, who helped organise and plan the competition.

There were 13 entrants to the competition and gardens were judged on 8th August, by Joanne Chilton, Community Services Director for AFG Cheshire and Nancy McFarland, SURF Chairman.

During the judging, entrants were assessed on their design, quality of horticultural features, floral displays, and standards of maintenance.

The competition supported AFG’s Promise by helping the people we support to realise their role in looking after the environment and being green. It also aimed to showcase the horticultural talents of the people supported by AFG Cheshire.

Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place winners in each category, and all entrants received a special garden gnome to thank them for their efforts.

Kristie Jacobs, Area Manager for AFG Cheshire said: “This competition started as a local competition for the people we support in Crewe; however word quickly spread across the rest of Cheshire. Everyone worked so hard on their gardens and it was a real pleasure to see how everyone pulled together to showcase their talents. The prize giving awards ceremony was a real success and everyone enjoyed a coffee and cake! The people we support in Cheshire and our staff members are asking if this will now become an annual event … watch this space.”

Joanne Chilton, Community Services Director for AFG Cheshire said: “It was an absolute delight to go and visit the people we support and see their absolutely fabulous gardens. We were very impressed by the number of high quality entries and the time and dedication many people spent on their gardens and it was difficult to decide on a winner for some categories; however all who took part should be proud of their achievements – and everyone was a winner”

She added: “Here’s to next year as I suspect this will now become a tradition in Cheshire.”
