Welcoming Mike Smith
We’re delighted to offer a warm welcome to Mike Smith, the newly appointed Clinical Director of Mental Health Services, who joined AFG in October.
A mental health professional with 30 years international experience, Mike brings with him a colourful wealth of experience including appearances on over thirty television and radio programme discussing issues of mental health as an ‘expert’, and he has also authored many publications in mental health.
A champion of recovery since his early days of working as a psychiatric nurse, (in 1997 Mike was awarded the UK Nurse of the Year), Mike has also held executive board level posts within the NHS and non Government sector in the UK.
Noted for his humour (yes, we’ve come across that already!) Mike is a regular conference speaker and is also noted for his challenges of the traditional psychiatric orthodoxy, coupled with guidance and practical tools for values based practice.
Mike has worked as a consultant for the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a number of countries developing community based and owned mental health services and has written widely on the process of recovery from mental illness.
In November, Mike travelled to The Gambia to meet with Elemental Wellbeing and the Director of Public Health, The Gambia, to discuss establishing a centre of excellence for West Africa to deal with stigma around Mental Health and Learning Disabilities in West Africa.
Before his visit, staff of Lion Court generously donated new clothing to the children of Gambia who were affected by the flooding in rainy season and had lost their homes.
AFG also donated laptops for communicating mental health education which were presented to Dawda Samba, Country Facilitator for Mental Health Leadership and Advocacy Project (MHLAP) and to Mr. Gassaman Communications Manger, WHO Gambia, during Mike’s trip.
We wish you well Mike in your new appointment.
