The Willow Garden project awarded lottery funding
The Fylde and Wyre team of Alternative Futures Group are supporting the Willow Garden project at Fleetwood Cricket Club. The project is creating a working allotment to support people with physical and mental health problems.
Some of the people supported by AFG in Fylde and Wyre have joined the project and John, David and Stephen attend every week. Stephen enjoys gardening and being outdoors and the project allows him to enjoy his interests as part of the local community. Stephen can now travel to and from Willow Gardens alone and once there he meets with the friends he has made while working on the project.
In order to grow, the Willow Garden project team applied for lottery funding and they were overjoyed to be awarded £49,000 by the People’s Millions Awards. The award was voted for by members of the public and a big thank you goes to all the AFG staff that voted and helped the project achieve the bonus award.
Willow Garden will now be able to make a real difference by offering gardening sessions to adults with learning disabilities or mental health issues.
Beneficiaries will be able to enjoy healthy outdoor activities in a community garden including a sensory area to experience a range of pleasant smells, sounds, textures and relaxation, growing vegetables, making bird boxes, willow weaving, and watching wildlife. Activities are tailored to match a person’s skill level giving them a sense of ownership and independence.
